Emily Parkes is the owner and creator of Form Fitness, a boutique fitness studio that puts form first! She helps clients exercise safely and effectively, while forming healthy habits, connections, and results.

Emily received her Kinesiology degree through the University of Winnipeg in 2007. Since then, she has become a Certified Seniors Fitness Instructor through the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging at Western University. She is a Certified Functional Movement Specialist (FMS 1 & 2), Certified Kettlebell Instructor (Kettlebell Kickboxing Canada), and a Certified Fitness Consultant with the Manitoba Fitness Council.

Emily has been training clients of all ages for the last fourteen years. Her first studio, Fifty 5 Fitness, successfully engages clients aged 55+ and helps them to be fit at their age. Emily loves to teach all types of group fitness classes including bootcamp, kettlebells, step, barre, strength & conditioning classes.

Emily developed a passion for FORM during her 25 years of dance training and 15 years of teaching ballet and pointe. She always says, “anyone can exercise and get a workout in, but over time, if we don’t exercise with correct form, injuries are bound to occur”. Emily has created the new FORM FITNESS studio to help minimize injuries during exercise, keeping clients moving for years to come!

What is your favourite FORM class to teach?

My favourite class to teach is Pilates. I love the way it leaves you feeling strong and relaxed at the same time.

What is your favourite FOod?

My favourite food is chocolate. No particular type or brand of chocolate, but Lindt chocolates, Toblerone, and dark chocolate with almonds or milk chocolate with hazelnuts would all make my top 5 list.

Where is the most interesting place you have been in the world?

I spent a week in Rome, and that’s a really interesting city. I also stayed with a Mayan family in their village for a few days, and that was a really interesting experience.

What is your current favourite TV show or Movie?

I have a few favourite shows. For feel-good, family drama I like Gilmore Girls. For a sitcom I like The Office. And for intense storyline I like Game of Thrones.

What do you do for exercise when you’re not teaching?

I take classes! Either FORM classes or Fifty 5 classes, whatever fits my schedule. I also walk the dog, I bike to work when the weather allows, and I have a wobble board I like to stand on when I’m doing desk work.

Describe your Instructor teaching style:

I like to keep the class moving. That means I tend to give a quick, brief set of instructions first and then once everyone's started I'll continue teaching, giving more specific cues and making individual corrections. But clients would be wise to do their own counting because I am NOT a reliable timekeeper!

What do you do for exercise when you’re not teaching?

For physical activity, outside of teaching, I enjoy taking a variety of classes myself and and walking my furry friend Domi.

Describe your Instructor teaching style:

My instructor teaching style is positive and encouraging yet challenging with a heavy focus on proper form, alignment, placement and posture. I am a big believer in honouring your body and celebrating all it CAN do. I strive to meet the needs of my clients and where they are and what is accessible to them at that moment and therefore offer a variety of modifications and/or challenges to increase/decrease the “spice” and allow for specific needs and/or injuries.

What is your current favourite TV show or Movie?

My favourite movie is the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!

What do you do for exercise when you’re not teaching?

I love taking barre classes as much as I love teaching them! You can find me at 6am spin when I’m not at the barre!

Describe your Instructor teaching style:

I probably think I’m funnier than I actually am! My main goal is to get the most out of each class. I like to flow together two or three moves and offer challenges to up the burn and shake to the next level! Make every moment count!

I also am very familiar with needing to modify and listen to your own body when you have an injury or are recovering.

Lastly, the playlist! I spend a lot of time making sure you forget how much you’re sweating as you move and groove.
